Advantages of Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery

Posted On Thursday 29th September 2016 11:12 AM

Hip replacement surgery is recommended to replace the damaged hip joint with an artificial implant in order to decrease pain and improve hip functions. The technique of approach may be different for hip replacement surgery like anterior approach and posterior approach. In anterior hip replacement surgery, the incision is made on the front side to access the hip joint rather than on the back of the hip.

Anterior Hip Replacement Surgery

This surgery is performed under general anesthesia. A small incision is made on the front side of the hip. Without cutting through muscles and soft tissues, the orthopedic surgeon will try to gain the access to the hip joint just by adjusting fewer muscles present on the anterior side of the hip. Damaged hip joint is then replaced by metal implant in the same way as in the traditional hip replacement surgery. After the implant is fixed the tissues are readjusted to their original place if needed and the incision is stitched back. Bandage is finally applied to allow the incision site to recover and stay germ free.

Advantages of Anterior Approach Hip Replacement Surgery

Every surgical procedure has its own advantages over the other which make it more feasible. So it is with anterior hip replacement surgery. These advantages are listed below-

  • Less Damage to Major Muscle: The front side of the hip has fewer muscles. Hence this approach avoids cutting up of major muscles and allows the surgeon to work through them.
  • Less Post Operative Pain: As this surgery avoids cutting of muscles, the patient experience lesser pain and needs fewer medicines to tackle existing pain.
  • Faster Recovery:  Except for the incision, there is no cutting involved in this surgery which in turn enhances recovery in patients with an anterior approach. Patients can bend their knee and bear the weight as soon as they feel comfortable and can start walking with crutches or cane.
  • Decreased Risk of Hip Dislocation: As this surgical approach does not disturb tissues and muscles surrounding the hip joint, chances of hip dislocation get reduced. Hip dislocation is a major concern post surgery which is minimized with anterior hip replacement approach.
  • Better Range of Movement: With the anterior approach, patients can sit with crossed legs and bend their hip without any risk. They can resume their daily activities like walking, sitting and bending very soon without worrying about hip dislocation.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay: The stay in hospital is smaller as this surgery does not involve complications. Patients can go back to their homes within a week and get back to their work. However physical therapy is to be followed to make surgery more successful.
