A brain tumor is a collection, or mass, of abnormal cells in the brain. Skull which encloses the brain is very rigid and any abnormal growth in such a restricted area can cause many problems. Brain tumors can be cancerous or non-cancerous. When non-cancerous tumors grow, they cause pressure inside the skull to increase which can damage the brain and can lead to life-threatening problems. Brain tumors are generally categorized in the primary and secondary type of brain tumor. Primary brain tumor originates in the brain itself whereas secondary occurs when the cancer cells spread to the brain from another organ.
The symptoms of a brain tumour vary from patient to patient depending on the exact part of the brain which is being affected. Following are some of the symptoms of brain tumor:-
Treatment for a brain tumor depends on the type, size, and location of the tumor with the overall health of the patient. Following are some of the treatment for brain tumor:-
Surgery: - If the brain tumor is located in a place where the surgeon can access the tumor easily then the surgeon will work to remove as much as brain tumor as possible. In some cases, tumors are small and easy to separate from surrounding brain tissue which makes the complete removal of tumor possible.
Whereas in case if the tumors can't be separated from surrounding tissue or if they are located near sensitive areas of the brain then surgery is a risky procedure. In such cases, the surgeon removes as much as tumor which is safe to remove. Removing even a portion of the brain tumor reduces the signs and symptoms of brain tumor. Brain Tumor Surgery Success Rate depends on the amount of tumor which is removed.
Brain Tumour Surgery carries some risks such as bleeding and infection whereas other risk factors depend on the part of the brain where the tumor is located. In case if the surgery on a tumor which is near the nerves that are connected to the eyes may carry a risk of vision loss.
Radiation Therapy: - In Radiation therapy, high energy beams are used to kill tumor cells. Radiation therapy can come from a machine outside the body and rare cases, radiation can be placed inside the body close to the brain tumor. External beam radiation focuses on just one area of the brain where the tumor is located or it can also be applied to the entire brain. Radiation therapy also causes various side effects which depend on the type and dose of radiation the patient is receiving.
Chemotherapy: - Drugs are used in chemotherapy to kill tumor cells. These drugs can be taken orally in a form of pill or injection. There are various side effects related to chemotherapy such as nausea, vomiting and hair loss.
Radiosurgery: - Radiosurgery uses multiple beams of radiation to give a highly focused form of radiation treatment to kill tumor cells in a very small area. Each beam of radiation is not very powerful but at the point where this beam meets at the brain tumor it receives a very large dose of radiation to kill the tumor cells. There are different types of technology which are used in radiosurgery to deliver radiation and to treat brain tumors, such as a linear accelerator or Gamma Knife.
Targeted Drug Therapy: - Targeted drug treatments focuses on some specific abnormalities which are present within the cancer cells. In targeted therapy by blocking these abnormalities, it can lead the cancer cells to die. Everolimus (Afinitor) is a targeted drug which is used to treat a benign brain tumor which occurs in people who have a genetic disorder called tuberous sclerosis.
